Frequently asked questions.
About gold-filled
What exactly is gold-filled?
Gold-filled is a premium material consisting of a thick, permanent layer of solid gold (by law, at least 5% of the item's total weight) that is mechanically bonded to a core of sterling silver or brass. It is not a thin plating; it's a durable, heavyweight coating that makes the gold the dominant surface. Think of it like a "gold sandwich" where the gold is the substantial, lasting outer layer.
How is it different from gold-plated or vermeil?
Gold Filled: Has a gold layer that is 100x thicker than standard plating. It's highly durable, tarnish-resistant, and designed for a lifetime of daily wear.
Gold Plated: Has a very thin layer of gold (less than 0.5% of weight) that can wear away relatively quickly with regular wear.
Gold Vermeil: Is a specific type of heavy gold plating over sterling silver. While high-quality, the gold layer is still thinner than gold filled.
We specialise in gold-filled because it offers the best balance of luxurious appearance, longevity, and value.
Will it tarnish or turn my skin green?
The thick gold layer acts as a robust barrier, making gold-filled highly tarnish-resistant. It will not turn your skin green under normal circumstances. With proper care (see below), your jewellery will maintain its beautiful finish for years.
Is it hypoallergenic?
Yes. Because the substantial gold layer fully seals the core metal, gold-filled jewellery is an excellent choice for those with sensitive skin or metal allergies, as skin only contacts the gold surface.
Care & longevity
How long will it last?
With proper care, gold-filled jewellery is designed to last for decades. The thick gold layer is permanent and will not flake or rub off under normal wear. It is the closest you can get to the longevity of solid gold without the price tag.
How do I care for my gold-filled jewellery?
Gold-filled jewellery is impressively durable, due to its thick gold layer offering strong resistance to daily wear. For absolute longevity, we recommend removing pieces before swimming or showering to protect their pristine finish from harsh chemicals and salts. This simple step ensures your jewellery stays in flawless condition for years to come.
Can it be resized or repaired?
Yes. Please get in touch, and I will assess the possibility.
